Ryan Coogler, director of the Black Panther series, has expressed his strong desire to cast legendary actor Denzel Washington in the upcoming Black Panther 3. Speaking on the Nightcap podcast with hosts Shannon Sharpe and Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, Coogler confirmed his commitment to bringing Washington into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Coogler’s Vision for Washington in the MCU
“I’ve been dying to work with Denzel,” Coogler said during the interview. “I’m hoping we can make that happen. I’ve got every intention of working with him on that movie. As long as he’s interested, man, it’s going to happen. He’s a living legend and a great mentor for so many of us.”
Coogler’s statement aligns with Washington’s own comments from last November, when he casually revealed to Australia’s Today that Coogler was writing a role for him in Black Panther 3.
‘Black Panther 3’ Timeline and Production Status
When asked about the potential timeline for Black Panther 3, Coogler responded, “Not long.” However, Marvel Studios has yet to make an official announcement regarding the sequel. Currently, only two Avengers films and Spider-Man 4 have been officially scheduled beyond 2025.
Despite the lack of an official confirmation, it is widely expected that a third Black Panther film will be greenlit, given the franchise’s massive success. The first two films collectively grossed over $2 billion at the global box office.
Washington’s Apology for Spilling the News
Washington, known for his roles in Training Day and Malcolm X, later admitted he may have spoken too soon about his involvement.
“I called [Coogler] and apologized for talking about the movie,” Washington told Variety. “And right there sitting with him was his beautiful wife. He’s still Ryan—humble and full of ideas. Whatever he writes, I’ll read.”
