Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring franchise, Fargo) has joined Javier Bardem and Amy Adams in the upcoming Cape Fear series, an adaptation of the classic thrillers from 1991 and 1962, both based on John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel The Executioners. Wilson will portray Tom Bowden, an attorney married to fellow lawyer Anna (Adams).

Like its film predecessors, the series follows the chilling aftermath of Max Cady’s (Bardem) release from prison, as he seeks revenge on the Bowdens, whom he blames for his conviction. However, this modern retelling will incorporate a fresh perspective, exploring America’s contemporary true-crime obsession.

Nick Antosca (The Act, A Friend of the Family) serves as writer and executive producer. The project boasts a powerhouse production team, including Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese—who helmed the 1991 film starring Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, and Jessica Lange—as well as Antosca’s Eat the Cat partner Alex Hedlund, Amblin Television’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, along with Bardem and Adams. The series is being produced by Universal Studio Group’s UCP and Amblin Television, with Antosca operating under an overall deal at UCP.

Wilson, known for his work in The Conjuring and Insidious franchises, also directed Insidious: The Red Door (2023). His extensive credits include Aquaman, Zack Snyder’s Watchmen (2009), Little Children, and HBO’s Angels in America, for which he earned an Emmy nomination. He is represented by CAA, Anonymous Content, and Hansen Jacobson.
