Netflix is sinking its teeth into Stephen King’s classic thriller Cujo with a new feature film adaptation produced by Roy Lee (It, Barbarian). The streamer is actively seeking writers to bring the terrifying tale back to life.
A Rabid Classic Returns
Originally published in 1981, Cujo became a cult horror favorite, following a 200-pound St. Bernard that turns viciously rabid after being bitten by a bat. The 1983 film adaptation, starring Dee Wallace, was a claustrophobic nightmare, as a mother and her young son found themselves trapped in a broken-down car, forced to fight for survival against the bloodthirsty beast.
Stephen King’s Adaptation Boom Continues
Netflix’s Cujo joins a growing list of King adaptations hitting screens, including:
- The Monkey (2024) – Directed by Osgood Perkins
- The Long Walk – Directed by Francis Lawrence
- The Running Man – Directed by Edgar Wright, starring Glen Powell
- Welcome to Derry – It prequel series by Andy Muschietti
- The Institute – Directed by Jack Bender
- Carrie – Series adaptation directed by Mike Flanagan
Meanwhile, King continues to churn out new work, with his latest novel, Never Flinch, set for release soon, and a third installment of The Talisman in the works.
With Netflix backing the project, Cujo is set to bring a fresh, modern take on one of King’s most viscerally terrifying stories. Stay tuned for more updates!
