Mountainhead: HBO Sets May Premiere for Jesse Armstrong’s New Film

Succession Creator Returns With Satirical Drama Starring Steve Carell and Jason Schwartzman

HBO has officially revealed that Jesse Armstrong’s upcoming original film, Mountainhead, will premiere on May 31 at 8 PM ET and will also stream on Max. This marks Armstrong’s first major project since the conclusion of his Emmy-winning hit series Succession in 2023 and is also his feature directorial debut.

A Dark Comedy Set Amid Global Turmoil

According to the film’s logline, Mountainhead unfolds “against the backdrop of a rolling international crisis” and centers on a circle of ultra-wealthy friends navigating personal and political tensions in isolation. The plot weaves together sharp social satire and dark comedy—hallmarks of Armstrong’s storytelling. The ensemble cast includes Steve Carell as Randall, Jason Schwartzman in a dual role as Randall, Souper/Hugo Van Yalk, Ramy Youssef as Jeff, and Cory Michael Smith as Venis.

Supporting roles are played by Hadley Robinson as Hester, Andy Daly as Casper, Ali Kinkade as Berry, Daniel Oreskes as Dr. Phipps, David Thompson as Leo, Amie MacKenzie as Janine, and Ava Kostia as Paula.

First Look at Mountainhead’s Billionaire Chaos

HBO has shared a few first-look images, giving fans a glimpse into the offbeat tone of the film. One photo features Carell, Schwartzman, Youssef, and Smith dressed in matching orange snowsuits posing for a selfie, while another captures a tense moment inside a lavish modern mansion. A third photo showcases a snow-covered estate perched atop a mountain, suggesting a remote and luxurious setting for the story’s unraveling.

From the World of Succession to the Slopes of Satire

Production on Mountainhead began in March 2025 in Park City, Utah, and wraps this week. The project brings back key members of the Succession creative team, including executive producers Frank Rich, Lucy Prebble, Jon Brown, Tony Roche, Will Tracy, Mark Mylod, and Jill Footlick. Armstrong not only wrote and directed the film but also served as executive producer, bringing his signature blend of dark wit and layered character work to the big screen for the first time.
