Apple Original Films is set to bring Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead novels to the screen, with Martin Scorsese attached to write, direct, and produce the first adaptation, Home.
Leonardo DiCaprio is set to star in the feature, which will be produced by Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions, DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions, and LBI Entertainment. Todd Field, a multi-Academy Award nominee, will also serve as a producer. The deal was brokered by Ellen Levine of Trident Media Group and Susan Schulman of the Schulman Literary Agency.
Home is the second book in Robinson’s acclaimed Gilead series, which explores themes of faith, redemption, and rural life in the fictional town of Gilead, Iowa. The series includes Gilead (winner of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award), Lila, and Jack.
Scorsese, a practicing Catholic, has a history of adapting faith-centered narratives, including The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) and Silence (2016). Robinson’s works, deeply influenced by her Congregationalist beliefs, have earned her numerous literary honors, including the National Humanities Medal and the Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction.
Further details on the project and potential adaptations of the remaining Gilead books are yet to be announced.
