Lucasfilm Confirms Project Still Alive Amid Waititi’s Busy Schedule
Star Wars Celebration 2025 has delivered major announcements for fans of the galaxy far, far away — and one of the more intriguing updates came directly from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy about Taika Waititi‘s long-awaited Star Wars movie. Speaking to Screen Rant, Kennedy acknowledged the delays but reassured fans that the project is still very much in play.
“Taika Time” Is Still Ticking — But the Film Isn’t Shelved
When asked about the status of Waititi’s Star Wars film, Kennedy responded with a smile:
“Taika is on Taika time… I’ve just continually said to him, look, when you feel that you’re ready and you can really devote the time, we’re going to do it. We’ll be waiting… I’m just hoping we get there. That will be a great Star Wars movie.”
This statement makes it clear: the film’s delay isn’t due to creative differences or internal studio issues, but rather to Waititi’s packed schedule. Known for his eclectic storytelling and offbeat humor, the filmmaker has been juggling multiple projects, and Lucasfilm is willing to wait until he can fully commit.
Script in Progress With ‘Poor Things’ Writer Tony McNamara
Kennedy also confirmed that Oscar-nominated screenwriter Tony McNamara (Poor Things) is co-writing the script alongside Waititi. She emphasized that the two are working well together and praised Waititi’s storytelling sensibility, adding:
“He has such a unique way of telling stories… I really hope we can get there.”
Waititi’s Film May Trail Other Star Wars Projects
While Kennedy expressed strong optimism, she acknowledged that Waititi’s movie is behind other announced projects in terms of development. Among these are The Mandalorian & Grogu, set to lead the next phase of the franchise, and Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy, slated for release in 2027.
Despite the wait, Kennedy’s remarks suggest that Waititi’s film is still a priority — one they believe could stand out within the Star Wars canon.
Why Waititi’s Vision May Be Worth the Wait
Waititi is no stranger to the Star Wars universe — he directed the The Mandalorian season 1 finale and voiced the beloved droid IG-11. Known for infusing his work with wit, heart, and originality (Thor: Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit), his take on Star Wars could offer a refreshing departure from the traditional tone of the saga.
Though recent projects haven’t all been blockbuster hits, his distinct voice still holds strong potential. Fans and insiders alike are hoping that the final product will be well worth the wait — even if it takes a while.
