Hulu Orders Liz Meriwether Series Inspired by 1987 Movie ‘Black Widow,’ Emmy Rossum in Talks to Star

Hulu has officially greenlit a new drama series from Liz Meriwether, with Emmy Rossum set to executive produce and potentially star.

The untitled series is loosely inspired by the 1987 movie Black Widow. According to the official logline, “An FBI agent uses the secrets from a female serial killer’s past to try and find her.” Sources say that if Rossum finalizes her deal, she would play the FBI agent.

Meriwether will serve as writer and executive producer. Rossum will also executive produce under her Composition 8 banner alongside Sara Moskowitz. Ron Bass, the screenwriter of the original Black Widow, joins as an executive producer. The series will be produced by 20th Television and Searchlight TV.

Meriwether’s Hulu Return

The project marks Meriwether’s return to Hulu, where she previously created and showran the critically acclaimed limited series The Dropout, starring Amanda Seyfried. The series, which chronicled the rise and fall of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, won Seyfried an Emmy for Best Actress in a Limited Series. The Dropout was also produced by 20th TV and Searchlight.

Meriwether is best known for creating the hit Fox comedy New Girl, which ran for seven seasons and nearly 150 episodes. She is also behind the upcoming FX series Dying for Sex and previously wrote the 2011 film No Strings Attached.

She is represented by WME and McKuin Frankel Whitehead.

Emmy Rossum’s Expanding Career

Rossum gained widespread recognition for her starring role as Fiona Gallagher in Showtime’s Shameless, where she remained for nine of the show’s eleven seasons. She also led the Peacock limited series Angelyne and the Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room alongside Tom Holland.

Beyond acting, Rossum has stepped behind the camera, directing multiple episodes of Shameless, as well as episodes of Animal Kingdom and Modern Love. Her film credits include Mystic River, The Day After Tomorrow, The Phantom of the Opera, and A Futile and Stupid Gesture.

She is represented by MGMT Entertainment, WME, Wolf Kasteler Public Relations, and Felker Toczek.
