Development Paused Following 'Snow White' Underperformance
Disney has indefinitely paused the development of its live-action adaptation of the 2010 animated film Tangled. This decision follows the underwhelming box office performance of the studio’s recent live-action Snow White remake, which has raised concerns about the viability of reimagining classic animated features.
Tangled, inspired by the Brothers Grimm tale of Rapunzel, was in active development with The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey attached to helm the project. Thor: Love and Thunder screenwriter Jennifer Kaytin Robinson was on board to pen the screenplay. The project had progressed to the pre-production phase, including casting auditions, before being put on hold.
‘Snow White’ Remake’s Financial Shortfall
The decision to pause Tangled‘s development is largely attributed to the financial disappointment of the live-action Snow White. The film has grossed approximately $69 million domestically and $145 million worldwide, falling significantly short of its reported $270 million production budget. This shortfall has prompted Disney to reassess its strategy regarding live-action adaptations of its animated classics.
Controversies Surrounding ‘Snow White’
The Snow White remake faced multiple controversies that may have contributed to its lackluster performance. Criticism arose over the casting choices and the depiction of the seven dwarfs, leading to public backlash. Additionally, lead actress Rachel Zegler‘s political statements reportedly caused tensions with co-star Gal Gadot, further complicating the film’s reception.
Future Live-Action Projects Proceed
Despite the setback with Tangled, Disney continues to move forward with other live-action adaptations. The live-action Lilo & Stitch is slated for release on May 23, 2025. Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, the film features newcomer Maia Kealoha as Lilo and Chris Sanders reprising his role as the voice of Stitch.
Additionally, a live-action version of Moana is scheduled to premiere on July 10, 2026, following the success of the animated sequel Moana 2, which grossed over $1 billion.
The postponement of the Tangled remake signals Disney’s cautious approach in light of recent challenges as the studio evaluates the future of its live-action adaptations.
