Max is bringing the world of Crazy Rich Asians to television with a new series adaptation of the bestselling book series. Adele Lim, who co-wrote the 2018 film, has been tapped as showrunner and executive producer, while Jon M. Chu, the movie’s director, will also return in an executive producer role.
A Fresh Take on a Fan-Favorite Franchise
Like the original film, the series will be based on Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians novels, which include China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems. Warner Bros. Television is producing the project, with Kwan also returning as an executive producer.
Details about the storyline and potential returning cast members from the 2018 hit remain under wraps.
A Powerhouse Creative Team
Lim, who made her directorial debut with Joy Ride in 2023 and previously co-wrote Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon, is also currently working on The Princess Diaries 3 with Anne Hathaway. Her past television credits include One Tree Hill and Private Practice.
Chu, meanwhile, is gearing up for the release of Wicked and its sequel, Wicked: For Good, following his success directing In the Heights, Step Up films, and G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
Production and Future Plans
The series is being produced by Lim’s 100 Tigers, Chu’s Electric Somewhere, and Kwan, alongside Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson under their Color Force banner, which was behind the original film. SK Global Entertainment is also involved, with Chloe Dan overseeing the project.
With the original film grossing over $238 million worldwide and sparking a demand for more stories from Kwan’s universe, the Crazy Rich Asians series is poised to bring the glamour, drama, and cultural richness of the franchise to a new format.
