Andrew Garfield Open to Spider-Man Return — But Only If It Gets “Very Weird”

The Actor Praises Spider-Verse’s Creative Freedom and Reveals What Would Lure Him Back to the Role

Andrew Garfield isn’t closing the door on wearing the Spider-Man suit again—but if he does, it won’t be your average superhero comeback.

During an appearance at Middle East Film & Comic Con in Abu Dhabi, Garfield spoke candidly about what would entice him to reprise his version of Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). His comments were shared in a panel clip by ET bel Arabi on Instagram.

“I really love playing Spider-Man,” Garfield said. “I would love to play the character again in some capacity, but I think it would have to be very weird… something very strange.”

Garfield Wants Something “Unique, Offbeat, and Surprising”

Rather than revisiting familiar territory, Garfield expressed a desire for a return that breaks the mold—something in line with the freedom and creativity of the animated Spider-Verse films.

“I would want to do something very unique, and offbeat, and surprising—kind of like the creative freedom they have with the Spider-Verse movies,” he explained. “You can honor the character in so many different ways through the multiverse.”

From The Amazing Spider-Man to No Way Home

Garfield first suited up as Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and its 2014 sequel. Although a third film in that series was scrapped, fans got an unexpected—and emotional—reunion when he appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) alongside Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire.

The surprise return was widely celebrated, with Garfield describing the experience as “healing.”

His Conditions for Returning to the Spider-Verse

In a 2024 interview with Esquire, Garfield revealed he felt “left dangling” when Sony abandoned plans for The Amazing Spider-Man 3. But his attitude has evolved.

“I would 100 percent come back if it was the right thing,” Garfield said. “If it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept—something that hasn’t been done before, that’s unique and exciting… If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m joyful in return.”

A Growing Multiverse of Possibilities

Garfield’s openness to a more experimental or multiversal take on Spider-Man aligns with Marvel’s current creative direction. With recent projects like Across the Spider-Verse and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday expanding the Marvel sandbox, the door is wide open for bold storytelling—and possibly a bizarre, brilliant return for Garfield’s Spidey.
