The action in the new Running 2049 takes place 30 years after the events of the first part, and although both films have a plot connection, it is not necessary to watch the first to understand the second. The film about the First World War, shot by Sam Mendes in a long frame format (up to eight and a half minutes per stage!), undoubtedly stands out not only for its bright humanistic message but also for the technically perfect work of the cinematographer Roger Deakins, who deservedly received the second of his Oscars for it. The war drama about two British soldiers forced to secretly make their way through the enemy’s rear to warn their friends of an impending attack has been declared the main film of the year by the British Academy of Film Arts and Sciences and has won many other awards.

Last year, the fairy tale about a talking wooden boy named Pinocchio received two creative readings on the big screen: a version from Disney+ with classic images and a creepy puppet tale from horror master Guillermo del Toro. Of these, del Toro’s version in 4K film resolution looks many times more interesting. First of all, it is textured to the point of itching at your fingertips: real dolls were used in the shooting, and with proper detail of the picture, you can literally feel all the roughness, irregularities, and splinters that add a sense of reality to what is happening. Secondly, it is voluminous and filled with a variety of sounds, from the sound of an axe to the hubbub of people and the ringing of a bell in the square.
In 4K, the film is a real theatrical performance, unfolding in front of you almost in reality, which definitely deserves applause at the very end.
7. Knives Out

There are no spectacular chase or shootout scenes in Knives Out, and there are not a lot of superimposed visual effects. This is a chamber detective story, which, however, looks great in HDR format. The plot revolves around the murder of the head of the Thrombey family, a famous author of detective novels, who was found dead in his room the morning after the celebration of the anniversary. Each of the members of the household has a motive, but only one of them is the murderer. So who? “Knives Out” is a very pleasing film, not devoid of peculiar aesthetics. Besides, in 4K resolution, the film is available for viewing on Russian streams. The second part of private investigator Benoît Blanc’s story, Knives Out: The Glass Onion, has already been released on Blu-ray Disc with the original English soundtrack and several dubbed.
